Diagnostic assessments

A full diagnostic assessment is the only way to confirm dyslexia. It is helpful as it allows parents to understand their child’s difficulties and provides recommendations of tailored intervention and strategies to support the child effectively in their learning and daily life. Individuals who do not have a reason for their difficulties often struggle with self-esteem, a diagnosis and appropriate mentoring is a positive process, revealing a child’s strengths, academic potential and ways to support barriers to learning. Reports also provide evidence to apply for a DSA (Disabled Students Allowance).

What happens?

  • A range of pre- assessment questionnaires are completed by the child, parents/ carers and teachers. These are completely confidential and vital to build a picture of the child’s educational history, strengths and learning challenges.

  • The assessment takes around 2.5 to 3 hours to complete ( including breaks). It is possible to break the assessment into 2 sessions over separate days if you feel this would suit your child. Observations of how your child behaves and any strategies used are noted to weave into the subsequent report.

  • The tests are marked and data analysed to produce a clear profile of your child.

  • The data, questionnaires, background information and observations are analysed to create the final report. It explains the conclusion of the assessment, strengths and challenges, suggested intervention, accommodations and Exam Access Arrangements. The report will be delivered, electronically, within 3 weeks of the assessment.

A dyslexia screener will not provide a diagnosis of dyslexia. However, it can be useful to support parents in the decision if it is appropriate to proceed with a full diagnostic assessment. The screener takes around an 1.5 hours to complete. A short report will be forwarded, highlighting results and suggested interventions to support your child.

Cognitive Profile Screener

This screener provides a cognitive profile of a student. Children from 5 to 18 can be screened using the battery of tests. It reveals strengths and weaknesses and is suitable for those presenting with or without dyslexic tendencies. A short report is forwarded, sharing the cognitive profile with tailored interventions and strategies to support. The process takes between 40 and 60 minutes.

A 6 week block of study skills sessions for older pupils occur at various points of the year. Tuition is available 1-1 at Dyslexia North West Services, at your child’s school (with their approval and an appropriate location being provided), online or in your home. Please note tutoring sessions are always high in demand and there may be a waiting list.

Tuition

  • These sessions last for 1 hour. The findings of a diagnostic dyslexic assessment report tailor the sessions for your child. Lessons are fun, multi sensory and build confidence, alongside teaching literacy skills.

Depending on the needs of your child areas that can be covered are:-

    • Speech and Language – word finding, receptive and expressive vocabulary and grammar

    • Phonological awareness - the ability to manipulate sounds

    • Reading skills – phonics, irregular word recognition, decoding, comprehension

    • Spelling – high frequency words, spelling patterns and rules

    • Writing – planning, editing, structure, punctuation, grammar  and using technology as an aid.

    • Sequencing

    • Memory - strategies to support recall

    • Handwriting

    • Study Skills- editing work, revision techniques, essay planning, note taking strategies

  • If your child does not have a formal diagnosis of dyslexia but weaknesses or gaps in reading or writing skills are present these sessions will help.

A questionnaire and initial, informal assessment will tailor the learning programme to suit your child.

  • Weaknesses in maths fluency or difficulty attacking worded maths problems often goes hand in hand with a dyslexic profile. Following a questionnaire, initial consultation and informal assessment a bespoke programme is created to support your child’s learning. All sessions are interactive, practical and fun!

“ Daniel, our son, has been tutored by Linda since he was seven, he’s now eleven. He is dyslexic and Linda has supported him with various strategies to build up confidence, which has supported him at school.  Linda’s work with Daniel has complimented and been aligned to school work. He has really benefitted from Linda’s support and tuition and enjoys going to his sessions.”

Laura

“Linda took the time to explain everything to our son in a way that was easy to understand and offered him breaks during the lengthy process. She was calm and engaging with him throughout, which helped make the assessment stress free.

His assessment was incredibly insightful and has enabled us and our son to understand his unique learning style and specific areas of difficulty. The report we received was very comprehensive and thorough, offering helpful advice to enable us to get our son the support he needs, whilst continuing his education. The whole process has been a positive experience of discovery for all of us.

We could not recommend Linda highly enough.”

Mrs J

Following a diagnostic assessment Linda worked with our teenage son to develop his ability to tackle exam questions. She supported him with revision techniques, spotting key words in questions and improving his own writing. Throughout, Linda was professional, knowledgeable and supportive. I strongly believe dyslexia is not a weakness but a different way of learning and processing information. My teaching experience has shown me anyone can learn and make progress, the trick is to find the methods, pace and hook that suit each student. I believe in nurturing each child’s unique strengths by providing personalised attention, tailored to their needs.
